World Cup defender Mats Hamels for retirement at the end of 2024/25 season

Roma defender Mats Hamels, who won the 2014 World Cup with Germany, announced at the end of the season, announced on social media on Friday. In an emotional video posted on Instagram, the 36 -year -old pointed out, “A moment that a soccer player cannot avoid,” adding “more than 18 years after everything gave me football, finish my career this summer.” Hamels came through Juniors Bayern Munich and first appeared to the club, who was 18 years old, before moving to Borussia Dortmund, where he became an essential part of the winners of the title Jurgen Klopp twice.

Hamels, who plays alongside his teammate Jerome Boateng, plays every minute of the 2014 World Cup final, where Germany won 1-0 at the Brazilian Maracana Stadium to raise a title for the fourth time.

He later returned to Bayern, where he won three other league titles. Hamel’s return to Bayern, which was seen by some Dortmund fans, was following the Champions League title, but the defender was unable to penetrate the first European competition.

Hamels returned to Dortmund in 2019, that is, a year before Bayern beat Paris Saint -Germain in the Champions League final to raise the sixth crown.

The defender played twice in the Champions League final, in 2013 and 2024, in both cases in a losing effort with Dortmund and in both times in Wembley.

Germany’s Hamels played 78 times, and Hamels crossed 508 games with Dortmund and 118 again for Bayern. He moved to the first division in Rome in 2024 and will retire after playing one season for the club.

Julian Nagilsman, Germany’s coach, Hamel, praised that “an international standard and a role model for a generation of defenders.”
