Village residents perform at Trump’s inauguration, much to the dismay of gay activists
The villagers and US President-elect Donald Trump appear to have buried the hatchet.
On Monday, lead singer Victor Willis — founder and leader of the popular San Diego-based disco music group — announced that Village People had accepted an invitation to perform at several Trump inauguration events next week, including at least one that Trump will attend.
They join a lineup of artists that also includes Carrie Underwood, Kid Rock, and Lee Greenwood.
The president-elect was a longtime fan of the Village People’s 1978 hit “YMCA,” which has long been synonymous with gay pride. Trump often played and danced to the song at his campaign rallies and at parties held at his home in Mar-a-Lago, Florida.
Village People had previously sent cease and desist orders to Trump in a failed attempt to get him to stop playing the YMCA without the group’s permission.
Monday’s inauguration announcement comes just two years after the singer Willis’ wife, attorney Karen Willis, sent a separate cease-and-desist letter to Trump.
