US Treasury exposed after Chinese hackers hacked 400 devices, including Janet Yellen’s computer: report

Chinese state-sponsored hackers have compromised hundreds of devices in the US Treasury Department, according to a new report.

The attackers gained access to 400 laptops and desktop computers at the department, including Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s computer. Reports Bloomberg, citing two people familiar with the matter.

An early investigation found that employee usernames and passwords were accessed, as well as at least 3,000 unclassified files.

The department’s confidential email and systems were not compromised, and fewer than 50 files on Yellen’s computer were reportedly accessed.

It appears that the hackers were searching for information about sanctions and international affairs.

They also had access to data about ongoing investigations at the Committee on Foreign Investment, an interagency body that reviews foreign investments in U.S. companies to determine potential risks to national security.

The Treasury Department reportedly discovered the hack after receiving a warning from BeyondTrust Corp.

The access management company notified the Treasury Department that its network had been exploited on December 8.

Chinese officials deny any involvement in these and other state-sponsored cyberattacks.
