The weapon that Putin could unleash to paralyze the West The world | news

As the war in Ukraine continues to rage and the West inches closer to open conflict with Vladimir Putin, there is a secret weapon in development that could destroy the modern way of life.

An electromagnetic pulse (EMP) bomb is a devastating weapon that can destroy almost all electronic equipment, including computers, satellites, radios, radar receivers, and even traffic and street lights.

The terrifying weapon works in theory by launching a nuclear explosion high into the Earth’s upper atmosphere above a targeted country or city, and scientists have already begun researching how to use such a device.

Electromagnetic interference is already a problem for the world because it is caused by the source of all energy in our solar system, the Sun.

When our nearest star, an angry ball of ongoing nuclear reactions, is particularly active, it can produce massive amounts of electromagnetic energy that it expels in so-called coronal mass ejections (CME).

These projectiles contain huge amounts of energy and can easily reach the Earth via electromagnetic interference which, if it is a particularly large projectile, can damage communications and computers, in the same way as an electromagnetic bomb.

In 1859, a massive coronal ejection was so powerful that it snapped telegraph wires around the world and created a massive, spectacular auroral event seen across much of the Northern Hemisphere.

Professor Richard Horne, Head of Space Weather at the British Antarctic Survey, and chair of the official group advising the Cabinet Office on solar electromagnetic threats, said: telegraph: “The plasma on the Sun creates a magnetic field, a shock wave, which accelerates particles toward us.”

But Professor Horn added that we usually only get notice of a coronal ejection a day or two in advance, and that: “Even then, you still can’t determine the size of the magnetic storm. It depends on the polarity of the magnetic field, and you can only do that half an hour after Warning.

Natural threats from the Sun are somewhat nullified by Earth’s thick atmosphere, and would pale in comparison if a nation decided to weaponize EMPs for use near our planet’s surface in the form of a bomb.

“The next war is not the war we think it will be — it will be fought in the electromagnetic spectrum, but here we are still trying to build the fastest planes,” Jonathan Hollerman of Grid Down Consulting, an EMP researcher, told the newspaper.

Thomas Wethington, of the Royal United Services Institute, added that any weapon used to deliver an electromagnetic blast needs “a sufficient energy level to cause damage over a wide area, and it is difficult to get that into a satellite.”

“It’s hard to see how you can harm a city without a ballistic missile.”

President-elect Donald Trump appeared to take the EMP missile threat seriously during his final term in office when he signed an executive order on coordinating the national response to it.

Russia is said to be exploring how to use an electromagnetic pulse weapon, possibly to release energy into space to destroy the Western satellite network.

This technology has already been tested. In 1962, the United States detonated a 1.4-megaton nuclear weapon at altitude over the Pacific Ocean in a test known as “Starfish Prime.”

The electromagnetic pulses from the explosion were so powerful that they knocked out street lights in Hawaii, about 900 miles from the explosion, and left a radiation field in low Earth orbit that damaged satellites.
