The shirt that replaced Victor Wembanyama’s famous shirt with a child is now up for auction
Nothing is sacred anymore. On December 24, Victor Wembanyama gave us one of the best shirt swaps ever when a young fan swapped his Wemby junior sized youth shirt for a shirt about 40 sizes too big.
It was a special moment. Adorable in every way. A literal giant of a basketball player standing next to a child taller than his knee. Unfortunately, nothing is sacred, and now the game jersey is up for auction.
It was so big that it crushed Wimpy’s spirit.
The jersey is for sale at Goldin Sports Auctions starting at $10,000scheduled to start next week. The saddest part is that there is no scenario I can think of where this wouldn’t just be a crush. Either something happened to this kid’s family where they really needed money in an emergency, which is terrible — or the entire moment was manufactured to try to get the shirt and make a quick buck. I don’t know which would be worse.
Either way, this kind of thing will make every player more bored than ever about giving away gear to young fans at matches. If there’s a constant worry that they’re just doing it to browse online, things will go the way of signatures, which have been completely ruined for kids by stupid, greedy adults.
