A thick layer of fog will cover much of the UK in the coming days, prompting the Met Office to issue a yellow weather warning.

Driving conditions could worsen as fog retreats from Exeter to York, covering some parts of Wales.

The warning extends across the East Midlands, East England, London, South East England, South West England, Wales, West Midlands and Yorkshire and the Humber.

The Met Office said the problem would continue over the next few days, with some pockets of frost expected to lead to clearer skies.

Meteorologist Claire Nasser said: “In fact, this is how we see this evening and overnight, stubborn cloud anywhere from the Midlands, East Anglia all the way to the south-east.”

“There is a lot of cloud in north-west Scotland, with some rain in between, and some clearer skies.”

“Elsewhere, with those clearer skies, we’ll likely see some pockets of frost, so temperatures drop near freezing, if not below, and again, with a lighter breeze, fog will form again in the Anywhere from the central and southern parts of England and Wales down towards the West Country.

Trains, buses and flights may experience delays during foggy conditions, which could mean slower journey times, according to the Met Office.

Thick fog led to the cancellation of dozens of flights and the delay of others in late December last year.

Heathrow, Gatwick, City of London, Manchester and Glasgow were just some of the airports affected by the persistent fog that began just after Christmas.

Low visibility has led to temporary restrictions on air travel.

When it’s foggy, drivers are advised to drive only when necessary, make sure their headlights are working properly and use their fog lights – when needed.

Drivers should only use fog lights when visibility drops below 100 metres, according to the Highway Code.

If you’re not sure when, see if you can see the taillights of the car in front of you. If you can’t, you should use rear fog lights.

Then, when visibility exceeds 100 metres, remember to turn off your lights to avoid dazzling other drivers.

Finally, drive slowly and keep your distance – you never know what could be ahead in low visibility.
