The European Union’s military leader favors sending troops to Greenland while Trump eyes the territory
“From my point of view, it would be quite logical not only to deploy US troops in Greenland, as is the case so far, but also to consider deploying EU soldiers there in the future,” the head of the EU Military Committee said.
The Austrian-born general said such a move would ultimately require a political decision. The Military Committee is the highest military office in the European Council, but it acts as an advisory body because the bloc does not have a dedicated army.
NATO, led by the United States, is the main military alliance of the European Union.
The general added that although Greenland is not part of the European Union as an external territory of Denmark, the Europeans and the United States have interests in Greenland, citing raw materials and strategic location.
“However, as ice melts further as a result of climate change, this also creates a certain potential for tension with Russia and possibly China,” he added.
