Several Moore shut down critics after sharing his son-in-law’s GoFundMe amid the fires
Mandy Moore is facing backlash after participating in a fundraiser for family members who lost their home in the Los Angeles wildfires. On Friday, Moore – whose home was also affected by the fires – reposted it GoFundMe page to her brother-in-law and sister-in-law on Instagram, asking for financial donations.
“With their first child arriving in a matter of weeks, they need our support now more than ever,” Moore wrote in the caption of the post. “Griff is a touring musician who also lost his entire arsenal of drums/percussion instruments that he uses to make a living. It’s all a lot. Many have asked how they can help during this unimaginably difficult time…please consider donating and sharing to help them rebuild.” “
The actress’s decision to participate in the campaign led to backlash from critics who claimed that she should donate her own money to support her in-laws, as her net worth is allegedly estimated at $14 million.
Moore edited her comment to address those questioning her intentions. “People wonder if we are helping our families or being credited with an arbitrary amount of money that Google says someone has is not helpful or compassionate,” she wrote. “Of course we are. Our friend Matt started this GoFundMe and I’m sharing it because people have asked how they can help.”
“We just lost most of our lives in a fire too. Please turn it off. No one is forcing you to do anything,” she added. The GoFundMe campaign has since raised more than $200,000, and as of Saturday, the organizer has disabled any further donations.
Moore’s letter to critics comes just days after she revealed that her Altadena home was “miraculously” still standing, despite the residence’s garage, music studio and back house being destroyed in the fires.
“Honestly, I am in shock and numb to everyone lost, including my family,” Moore wrote alongside several photos of the devastation. “My kids’ school is gone. Our favorite restaurants have been leveled. So many friends and loved ones have lost everything too. Our community is shattered but we will be here to rebuild together. Sending love to all those affected and on the front lines trying to save. This is under control.”
