A talk show panel including former England captain Michael Vaughan and legendary Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist took a brutal dig at Rohit Sharma during the India-Australia Test series. Rohit did not feature in the first Test and in the next three matches, he scored just 31 runs. The India captain was criticized by both fans and experts and ended up dropping himself in the final Test match in Sydney. During the panel discussion, members were asked to choose the best team of the summer, and Ian Higgins of The Grade Cricketer said – “Well, it has to be Rohit Sharma’s PR team.” The answer left everyone in splits and even Vaughan nodded in agreement with the statement.

“They had a good summer – they came in late, missed the Test match, got rested for the last Test match, and still didn’t lose! And after that, he wants to play,” Higgins went on to say.

Former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar said he has a strong belief that Rohit Sharma has the independence to decide when to retire from international cricket, although he believes the selectors could have a say in it as well. As India suffered a 3-1 Test series loss in Australia, Rohit made just 31 runs in five innings, and his decision to withdraw from the Sydney Test heightened speculation about his international future.

“I think in Indian cricket, Tendulkar decides his future, and Rohit Sharma is the one who will decide his future. Retirement is a personal decision – how long you want to play or how much you want to contribute is up to the player. In the end, though “It is also up to the selectors – in this case, Mr Ajit Agarkar and his team,” Manjrekar said on an episode of Star Sports’ ‘Deep Point’ programme.

Manjrekar also suggested that Virat Kohli might consider playing a season of county cricket in England to boost his Test game in English conditions ahead of the five-match Test series in June, citing the example of Cheteshwar Pujara.
