According to her family, Carey was last seen on the evening of January 7, when her granddaughter, Dalis Kelly, drove her home. By the next morning, police barricades blocked Kelly’s attempts to check on her grandmother, as flames swept through the area. Kelly later searched for Carrie at a shelter set up at the Pasadena Civic Center but was unable to locate her there.
Officials confirmed days later that Carey’s remains had been discovered on her badly damaged property. The news was shared by Kelly on social media on January 12. “About an hour ago, the coroner confirmed that her remains had indeed been found on the property. #RIPMOMMADEE. We had a great race. You have affected my life in many ways. This loss is devastating, Kelly wrote.
Carrie’s granddaughter, Lori Beamer Wilkinson, described her as remarkably active and full of life. “You wouldn’t think she was 95,” Beamer-Wilkinson said.
