Rachel Maddow will return to a work schedule five nights a week during the first 100 days of the Trump administration

Rachel Maddow will return to a five-nights-a-week schedule during the first 100 days of Donald Trump’s administration, bolstering MSNBC’s lineup at a crucial time.
Maddow has hosted the network’s top-rated show one night each week, Mondays, since 2022, with Alex Wagner anchoring the 9pm ET Tuesday-Friday slot.
Within 100 days, Wagner will travel the country to conduct a series of reports called Trumpland: The First 100 DaysFocus on the effects of the returning president’s policies. In the last 100 days before the election, Wagner has been reporting from the Democratic National Convention, presidential debates and other political events.
As a top ratings earner, Maddow’s return to the weeknight schedule could give the network a needed boost after a post-Election Day viewership decline, a decline that CNN also suffered. Executives hope the public will convert once the new administration does its job. Maddow and other MSNBC opinion hosts in particular are important voices in opposition to the new administration, as they were during Trump’s first term.

Maddow pulled back from her late-night schedule after signing a new contract in 2021. This has given her more time to focus on her podcast and book. She also served as executive producer of the documentary From Russia with Lev, her debut film, which attracted 2.2 million viewers.
MSNBC has averaged 706,000 prime-time viewers since the election, down 57% from an average of 1.63 million before Nov. 5. The network pointed to past post-election periods, when the network also saw viewership declines, only to bounce back. Maddow also led coverage of Trump’s inauguration on January 20.
The network also plans to launch a podcast, The Planner with Jen PsakiAbout the future of the Democratic Party. All in with Chris Hayes will launch a recurring segment called Here is What Is True, which is described as a “direct reality check” of the news coming out of Washington.
MSNBC is in the process of separating from parent Comcast under the company’s plan to separate cable networks. The new company, named SpinCo in the meantime, is headed by Mark Lazarus.
