Neil Young shares his thoughts on Bob Dylan’s autobiography Completely anonymous And memories of his past with the famous musician.
“I love Bob Dylan and his music. Always. He’s a great artist. He was on my bus one time and I didn’t recognize him and threw him out but that’s another story,” Young wrote in his review on his personal website. Neil Young Archive.
Despite his somewhat negative encounter with Blowing in the wind Singer Young went on to praise the film, which stars Timothée Chalamet as a young Dylan, saying: “This film is a great tribute to his life and his music. I think if you like pop music you should watch this great movie. “I loved it.”
The film, directed by James Mangold, revolves around Dylan’s rise to fame in the 1960s and his involvement in the folk music scene, just as Young was.
Hollywood ReporterChief film critic David Rooney also gave his stamp of approval in his review of the film: “Any Dylan fan, or indeed anyone with a penchant for the music coming out of New York City in the first half of that turbulent decade, will find the music well enough.” A delight in Mangold’s expertly crafted film. The entertainment is impeccable, and many of the musical performance sequences could not be more transporting, benefiting greatly from the lead actors giving their own singing a respectable polish.
Rooney went on to praise Chalamet’s performance as Dylan, as he learned to sing and play guitar for the role: “His voice – raw, nasal, raspy but full of emotion, anger and sarcastic wisdom – is close enough to the original to be unmistakable and yet colored by the actor’s personality to the fullest.” A degree that suggests something closer to solidarity than impersonation.
