Marcus Rashford and Erik Ten Hag could be set for an awkward meeting with the former Manchester United star and manager expected to join forces in January.

A whole host of clubs around the world have shown interest in Rashford whose United career ended after he was dropped from the squad by Ruben Amorim and admitted he was “ready for a new challenge”.

AC Milan were favourites, but they can only sign one English player in the current transfer window, and they have turned their attention to Manchester City’s Kyle Walker.

Telegraph Borussia Dortmund are now the favorites to sign the striker on loan, with closest rivals Monaco also reported.

On paper, Dortmund appears to be the ideal place for the 27-year-old to revive his careerafter Jadon Sancho did just that after a loan spell at the German club last season.

However, if Rashford goes to Westfalen Stadium, he could find a familiar face waiting for him.

Sky Sports Germany Dortmund are reportedly on the verge of sacking coach Nuri Sahin, with the club slipping to 10th in the Bundesliga.

It is said that Tuesday’s Champions League match in Bologna could decide Sahin’s fate and Ten Hag is a “serious candidate” to replace him.

The Dutchman was recently spotted at the club and given a tour by its manager, and is ready to take charge immediately after being sacked by United in October.

It is far from a confirmed deal, but Dortmund also like Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeneß, but they will have to wait until the summer to sign him.

Rashford enjoyed the best season of his career under Ten Hag in 2022/23, finding the back of the net 30 times, but that was followed by a very poor season in 2023/24 that produced just eight goals.

The pair also clashed after the player called in sick to training last January, but was actually celebrating in Belfast, leading to him being ruled out of the FA Cup tie.

The England international’s decline in form has been a big factor in United’s decline over the past 18 months and was among a number of factors that led to Ten Hag’s sacking.

Following United’s 3-1 loss to Brighton on Sunday, Amorim shared an update on Rashford’s future at the club, saying: “It’s his choice.” [not to play].

“I don’t want to focus on this bad moment because in the games we lost, Rashford is not here. I don’t want to put this moment on Rashford. Rashford is out of this moment because he is not playing.

“No matter what, I’m not going to take a player out that I don’t think is best for the team.”
