King Charles: Auschwitz anniversary trip ‘very important’

British King Charles III described his decision marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the German Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau as “extremely important.”

Charles He spoke about his upcoming trip when he met Holocaust survivor Manfred Goldberg at a reception at Buckingham Palace to commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27.

Goldberg, 94, who survived concentration camps, including Stutthof, and a death march as a boy, said the first thing the king mentioned was the trip, saying it was “official now” after Buckingham Palace had announced it earlier.

“I feel like I should go celebrate the 80th anniversary, [it’s] “Very important,” the king later told the elderly survivor who visits schools to give first-hand accounts of the Holocaust, and described it as “very special.”

Charles will travel to Poland To join other dignitaries and Holocaust survivors invited to attend the service held at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum, in celebration of the 80th anniversary.

Buckingham Palace said that ahead of the event next Monday, Charles will meet with members of the local community in Krakow and Polish President Andrzej Duda.
