The men’s ice hockey finals at the 2025 Khelo India Winter Games on Monday will be a repeat of last year’s gold medal round match. On Sunday, Indian Army beat hosts UT Ladakh 2-1, while ITBP beat Himachal Pradesh 3-1 to set up an exciting title clash at the NDS Stadium Complex.
The penultimate day of the first leg of the Khelo India 2025 Winter Games brought mixed results for hosts Ladakh even as Maharashtra overtook Telangana and Karnataka in the medal tally. With gold, silver and bronze from their skaters on Sunday, Maharashtra tops the standings with eight medals (2 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze).
Ladakh’s skaters started their day on a bright note at the NDS Stadium. In the women’s 1,000m short track, Scarma Tsultem (2:17.91 seconds) and Padma Angmu (2:21.13 seconds) took the top two places for Ladakh, leaving Udrika Singh of Madhya Pradesh (2:22.74 seconds) in third place. Skarma’s first KIWG gold was Ladakh’s second this year.
With a total of four medals (two gold and two silver), Ladakh is second in the medal standings with Tamil Nadu, which won two golds – the women’s relay and the men’s 500m – on Sunday.
Maharashtra skaters won gold (men’s relay), silver (women’s relay) and bronze (men’s 500m) on Sunday. Karnataka did not win any medal today but Tamil Nadu won gold (Avikshit Vijay Viswanath) and silver (Selvakumar Muthukumar) at Gupuks Pond where the men’s 500m event was held.
In the afternoon, the Indian Army became the first team to enter the final of the men’s ice hockey competition. The defending champions fended off a strong challenge from hosts Ladakh to win a thrilling match 2-1.
In another full house at the NDS Stadium, Army vs Ladakh was a closely contested encounter. Tensions were often high as Ladakh enjoyed massive support from home, but the young Army men from the Ladakh Scout Regiment Center supported their team to the hilt with characteristic enthusiasm.
To the delight of the home team’s fans, Ladakh opened the scoring in the 13th minute of the first half through Stanzin Lutz. The Army team, who suffered a 3-1 defeat to ITBP in a league match on Saturday, took some time to settle down and faced several close calls.
The second half produced no goals but Ladakh allowed two easy goals in less than a minute in the third and final period to allow Army to take control of the match. Army played better as a team as the goals scored by Sherab Zhangmu (32nd minute) and Tsewang Chorul (33rd minute) came from quick assists in the scoring area.
