Liverpool suffer a travel nightmare after Tottenham defeat as their return flight was diverted ‘due to weather conditions and Arne Slott had to cancel training’

Liverpool endured a travel nightmare as they tried to get back to base following their 1-0 defeat at Tottenham on Wednesday night.

Arne Slott’s side suffered a rare defeat in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, as Lukas Bergvall’s controversial goal secured victory for the home side.

The Reds boss will have a lot to think about after the game, and it looks like he will have plenty of time to do so after their return flight to Merseyside was disrupted by the weather.

according to The athleteAfter the match, the team’s flight back from London Stansted was unable to land at John Lennon Airport due to icy fog and had to divert to Birmingham.

From there, they took the team bus back to Liverpool but did not arrive until the early hours of the morning and training was therefore cancelled.

The Reds will look to bounce back from defeat when they return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup.

Arne Slott’s side have not been beaten since September before the loss to Tottenham and will be hoping to return to winning ways in their next matches.

The slot was left fuming when Bergvall escaped a second yellow card to score the winning goal for Tottenham in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.

Reds boss Slott was furious on the touchline when Bergvall, who had already been booked, brought down Kostas Tsimikas in the lead-up to the goal but escaped further punishment.

“I don’t think there’s any controversy about it,” Slott said. “I think I saw Ange sitting here on Saturday and Spurs were not happy with some decisions.

Someone went against them, tonight someone might have gone for them.

“The decision has been made, you can’t change it. When he didn’t give the second yellow card, no one thought it would have such a big impact after 30 seconds.

I’m 99.9% sure I wasn’t the only one who didn’t feel my best when I went in. It was like that for him. [the referee] It’s also far from ideal.

Before Bergvall’s controversial intervention, the two sides had engaged in a tough encounter at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and looked set to end in a goalless draw after Dominic Solanke saw a goal ruled out for offside midway through the second half.

However, in the 86th minute Bergvall finished the game off in style after good work from the tireless Solanke to score his first goal for Tottenham.

Reds captain Virgil van Dijk also expressed his anger at the referees after the match and claimed they should have done better.

He added: “I think it was quite clear that he was going to get a second yellow card (for Lukas Bergvall).”

I think it was pretty clear. It was a coincidence and a minute later he scored the winning goal.

“It is what it is.” He (the referee) made a mistake in my opinion and I told him so. He thinks he didn’t do it, but it was quite clear I think and everyone on the sidelines knew it was supposed to be a yellow card.

“There’s an assistant referee, there’s a fourth official there, there’s VAR, there’s a referee and he didn’t get the second yellow card. I’m not saying that’s why we lost tonight, but it was a big moment in the game.
