JK Rowling compares Neil Gaiman to Harvey Weinstein amid sexual assault allegations
More sexual assault allegations against Neil Gaiman have JK Rowling today offering a shocking and insightful comparison to Sandman author.
Not long after New York MagA detailed cover story about the many new and old claims against Gaiman by several women was dropped Harry Potter The content creator took to social media to give some hardcore context of her own. No stranger to controversy, criticism and accusations of being transphobic for her harsh views on gender identity and underage transition, Rowling has weighed in on the initial reactions to the allegations against the much-lauded Gaiman, jailed rapist Harvey Weinstein and the #MeToo explosion against those frequently accused. “The literary crowd that had so much to say about Harvey Weinstein before his conviction has been strangely silent in its response to the multiple accusations against Neil Gaiman from young women who have never met, and yet — as with Weinstein — they speak remarkably ‘similar stories,’” Rowling wrote. This morning on X in the second of two posts about Gaiman.
As with Weinstein, Gaiman was not only criminalized for assaulting women, but also for using nondisclosure agreements and payoffs to silence alleged victims. Also, like Weinstein, as well as Bill Cosby, Danny Masterson and others who have faced justice over the past few years for rape and assault, reports from unrelated women regarding Gaiman seem to reveal a repeat MO.
Based on information and elements presented last summer in Tortoise Media’s six-part podcast “Master: The Allegations Against Neil Gaiman,” New York MagWritten by Leila Shapiro, “No Safe Word” often spoke candidly to eight women, three of whom had never been out in public. The alleged attacks, some of which were said to have occurred with Gaiman’s son nearby, against women in their late teens to early 20s, occurred at the older Gaiman’s home in the Empire State. Other incidents occurred in New Zealand when he, his wife and Dresden Doll member Amanda Palmer, and their child were under lockdown due to coronavirus.
Calling the previous accusations consensual and denying any assaults, Gaiman, the CAA representative, did not address the new allegations, which in the eyes of some were complicated by the NDAs and apparent ongoing communications with the author by several women.
Both Netflix and Amazon Prime Video have projects with the award-winning Gaiman, such as the second season of the TV series Sandman And the now 90-minute finale Good news. While Gaiman backed off from making offers Good news Last September, as the first round of allegations against him surfaced, neither streamer responded Monday to Deadline’s requests for comment on the new allegations against the creator/producer. If either of them comes back to us, this post will be updated.
Weinstein is currently under medical supervision awaiting a new criminal trial on the East Coast for multiple sex crimes, and was quickly shunned and condemned by the industry after late 2017. Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison after a Manhattan jury found the former studio head guilty in 2020 of raping actress Jessica Mann and sexually assaulting production assistant Miriam Haley. A panel of New York Court of Appeals judges overturned the conviction in April last year, ruling 4-3 that prosecutors erred by allowing testimony by other defendants against Weinstein whose claims had not been tried.
Weinstein was convicted of sex crimes in Los Angeles in 2022 and sentenced to 16 years in prison, and still faces a number of civil trials on both coasts. Latest reported suffering from leukemia and suing New York state for $5 million over so-called “deplorable conditions” at Rikers Island prison (which he is a friend of the prison), Weinstein has not testified yet a new East Coast trial date has been set.
The indeterminate calendar is due in part to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office indicating more indictments will be forthcoming against Weinstein. No charges have been brought against Gaiman by authorities in the United States, New Zealand, or the United States American Gods Original writer in the UK to date.
