Jean Smart urges networks to ditch award shows and donate

Hacks star Golden Globe winner Jean Smart urged networks to abandon broadcasting upcoming Hollywood awards shows and donate to Los Angeles wildfire victims and firefighters.

“With all due respect, during Hollywood’s festive season, I hope any of the networks broadcasting the upcoming awards will seriously consider not televising them and donating the proceeds they would have generated to fire victims and firefighters,” the actress wrote. Her Instagram account follows the word “ATTENTION” written in large font. Her note came in white letters on a black background.

No specific prize offers or dollar amounts were mentioned. However, among the big awards shows coming up are the Screen Actors Guild Awards, which are scheduled to air on Netflix on Sunday, February 23, from the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall, and the Academy Awards, which are scheduled to air on ABC. Due to the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has decided to extend the voting period for the Oscar nominations, which began at 9 a.m. PT on Wednesday morning and was scheduled to end at 5 p.m. PT on Sunday night. It will now run until 5pm PT on Tuesday, January 14. The reveal of the Oscar nominations has also been postponed from Friday, January 17, to Sunday, January 19.
