Ian Wright fires warning over ‘dangerous’ transfer to Arsenal board after Aston Villa draw | soccer

Ian Wright has warned the Arsenal board that Mikel Arteta’s side will “wither” this season if no new players are signed in the January transfer window.

Arsenal blew a two-goal lead against Aston Villa on Saturday to draw 2-2 with Unai Emery’s side.

The result left Arsenal six points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool, who secured a 2-0 win over Brentford earlier on Saturday after a stoppage-time brace from Darwin Nunez.

Following his side’s draw with Villa, Arteta admitted his side are “very short” on attacking options with Raheem Sterling the only senior attacking player on the Arsenal bench.

Wright believes Arsenal will lose more ground to Liverpool, who also have a game in hand, if they remain inactive in the January transfer window.

“It’s difficult for Arsenal, they are very difficult at what they do,” Wright told Premier League Productions.

When you look at the bench, there isn’t even a striker who has scored a goal in the Premier League this season, it’s a complete shame.

“You have a midfielder who plays at right-back. It’s something that hasn’t really worked for us, I think we’ve won one game out of six when Thomas Partey has played there, it’s a weak position for us.

“Unfortunately for me again, I will say I think the manager needs a lot of help from the board now. I don’t think he can do more with what he has, otherwise there would be no way to continue using Thomas Partey at right-back if you have options, which he is.” He needs options to attack and defend.

“We are very close to being in danger of disappearing.

“In the next two games, if that doesn’t happen, if they don’t bring someone in to give them a boost because you can see they look a bit tired.

“I think they look very tired mentally and physically, and that’s something I can’t stress enough how much we need help right now, we need the players.”

Asked if Arsenal had any chance of challenging Liverpool if they did not strengthen Arteta’s squad in January, Wright replied: “Not the way we are playing at the moment, not with the players we have, look at the bench.”

“We have Myles Lewis Skelly coming in at left-back who is performing unbelievably, I have to mention the summer he brought in [Mikel] merino f [Riccardo] Calafiore, unfortunately, Calafiore was injured, Merino… it didn’t quite happen for him in a season where we really need people to get going.

He added: “Then you have a young lad in Myles Lewis Skelly who has come in and shown he can play in that position, so could we have used that money somehow, we have needed a striker for a few years yet.”

“Those are the things I’m sure Arsenal fans will be thinking about. But these are the things we have to think about now because if we are to have any chance of wanting to be in this race, something has to happen in the last two weeks of this transfer window.” Because with the players he has at this moment and the injuries he’s had, it can’t happen, not the way Liverpool play, not the way they go about their business.
