His wife, Bushra Bibi, was also sentenced to seven years in prison after they were accused of accepting a gift of land from a real estate tycoon in exchange for laundered money.

Prosecutors say Khan allowed businessman Malik Riaz to pay fines imposed on him in another case from the same £190 million laundered funds.

Khan has denied any wrongdoing and has insisted, since his arrest in 2023 and indictment in about 200 cases, that all allegations are a conspiracy by his rivals to prevent him from returning to office.

His party claims the recent conviction was used to pressure him to remain silent.

“I will not make any agreement and will not seek any compensation,” Khan told reporters inside the courtroom after his conviction.

Judge Nasir Javed Rana said: “The prosecution has proven its case. Khan has been convicted.”

Religious healer Bibi, who was recently released on bail, was arrested in court after the conviction, said her spokeswoman Mashal Yousafzai.

The cricket star was ousted from power in a vote of no confidence in 2022.

The sentence was postponed several times over the past month, with analysts saying the prison sentence was being used to pressure Khan to accept a deal with the military to abandon politics.

Khan has previously had four convictions, two of which were overturned while the sentences in the other two cases were suspended.

But he remained in prison due to pending cases.

Khan was banned from running in the elections that took place last February, and his party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was obstructed due to a widespread crackdown.
