‘Five fighting for life’ after a tram accident at Strasbourg station left at least 50 people injured as smoke filled the tunnel
At least five people are reportedly fighting for their lives, and dozens were injured after two trams collided at a station in France.
Chaotic footage shows people breaking down tram doors to pull passengers from the carriages after the horrific accident at Strasbourg-Ville station.
People could be heard screaming as smoke filled the subway station after the accident.
Another video clip shows the tram on the sidewalk, its front and rear ends destroyed.
Rene Cellier, director of the Fire and Rescue Service, said that at least 50 passengers were injured in the accident, French media reported. Actu17 Reports.
Five of the wounded are reportedly in critical condition.
About 100 people were on the tram at the time.
It is believed that the collision resulted from one of the trams accidentally changing its course before colliding with a second tram that was parked at the station.
One of the trams was reported to have derailed after the accident, and the cause is being investigated.
The police confirmed that tram movement through the main station stopped “after a tram accident.”
The Basse-Rhin Fire and Rescue Service said: “Tram accident at Gare Centrale station in Strasbourg. Many resources have been mobilized.
“Avoid the Place des Halles, Gare and Boulevard du Président Wilson areas and facilitate access to emergency services.”
Pierre Jacobovich, a member of the Strasbourg City Council, posted a tweet in which he said: “Majou tram collision at Strasbourg station.
“Support and recognition for Emergency services I am mobilized and all my thoughts are for those affected.
