2024 has been a disappointing year for Hollywood in India, with only a few of its major releases managing to make a significant impact. Among the films that performed well in the country, Mufasa: The Lion King and Deadpool & Wolverine took the top two spots, with the former still running in theaters after its Christmas weekend release.
Mufasa’s current earnings in India are over Rs 150 crore, ahead of its other Disney release, which ended its run in India at the Rs 150 crore mark after its July 2024 release. Notably, Mufasa opened to just a third of D&W’s debut numbers, making its final overtake For D&W at the box office it’s great.
Mufasa’s popularity in India can be attributed to his powerful voice cast that includes Shah Rukh Khan, Aryan Khan, AbRam Khan, Mahesh Babu, and more. The film also benefited from positive word of mouth, thanks to its story, as well as the success of 2019’s The Lion King.
Told in flashbacks, Mufasa’s plot chronicles the titular lion’s journey from when he was an orphaned cub to becoming king of the Pride Lands. He also delves into his rivalry with Taka, the heir to the royal line who ends up being a nobody and blames Mufasa for his misfortune.
Deadpool & Wolverine stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as the superheroes, alongside Leslie Uggams, Emma Corrin and more.
Godzilla x Kong was one of the successful Hollywood films of 2024 in India as well, crossing the Rs 100-crore mark. The film features Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Dan Stevens, Kylie Hotel, Alex Ferns, and more in lead roles. The titular ancient giants each collide in an epic showdown as the humans uncover their tangled origins and connections to the mysteries of the show’s Skull Island.
After a quiet 2024, all eyes are now on Hollywood’s most anticipated slate of 2025. With blockbusters like Jurassic World: Rebirth, Captain America: Brave New World, Wicked: For Good, How To Train Your Dragon, Superman, and Mission: Impossible 8. With Avatar 3 and more on the horizon, the year promises to be a cinematic extravaganza.
The massive fan base of these franchises and their history of strong box office performance in India suggest that the current year could mark a major rebound for Hollywood. Which of these shows are you most excited for?
