Borussia Dortmund, after its defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt, may fall out of the top ten in the German League
Eintracht Frankfurt overcame the imminent departure of in-form player Omar Marmoush to beat Borussia Dortmund 2-0 at home on Friday, adding more misery to the reeling visitors. Frankfurt, who excluded Manchester City goal Marmoush from their matchday squad just hours before kick-off, were decisive and in control. Striker Hugo Ekitiki put Frankfurt ahead early, and Dortmund had only a few chances despite dominating the ball.
In stoppage time, Oscar Hoglund took advantage of a Dortmund mistake in midfield, took possession and ran 40 meters to put the ball past a helpless Gregor Kupil.
“We know what we had at Omar,” Frankfurt’s Mario Götze told DAZN.
“He’s an amazing player and a great personality. It’s always a shame when a player leaves, but the team performed well against Dortmund today.”
The result means that Dortmund, who played in the Champions League final in June, have lost their last three matches and have managed just one win in their last six.
The team could fall to 11th place depending on the weekend’s results and are 11 points behind Frankfurt, who are on track to finish the season among the top four for the first time in three decades.
Dortmund midfielder Pascal Gross said: “It is a sport that depends on results and in the end we were not able to achieve a result. It is very difficult.”
Sebastian Kehl, Dortmund’s sporting director, supported coach Nuri Sahin after the match, despite the poor performance, saying, “We will continue to move forward. Nuri has our trust.”
“We are disappointed and dissatisfied with where we are,” he added. “This is not the team that should sit in our place at the table.”
– Marmoush to City “possible” – Just hours before kick-off, Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krosch confirmed that Marmoush had been left out of the squad due to a “very, very likely” move to City.
Despite their poor recent form, the visitors started strongly, with Serho Guirassi heading Julian Rierson’s cross against the post after eight minutes.
Expected to bear a heavy burden after Marmoush’s departure, Frankfurt’s French striker Ekitiki put the hosts ahead in the 18th minute.
Taking advantage of some quiet Dortmund defence, Rasmus Christensen ran into acres of space on the right. The Dane tore down the wing and put a controlled cross into the path of Ikitiki, who glanced the ball home.
As they have done for most of the season, Dortmund dominated possession but were unable to penetrate the goal, with the hosts holding on.
With just over 10 minutes left in the match, Nnamdi Collins collided with Jimmy Gittins inside the penalty area, but the referee cleared the ball before showing the yellow card to Dortmund captain Emre Can due to a complaint.
“It was a clear penalty,” Gross told DAZN.
Dortmund pushed men forward while Sahin made a series of attacking substitutions, but Frankfurt’s Hoglund stole the ball from Can and advanced up the field before settling the score.
After the end of the match, Marmoush left the stands crying and celebrated with his former teammates for the last time.
Götze added: “He helped the team and I think you can see in the pictures how much we appreciate him. We are happy for him, he is part of football.”
On Saturday, league leaders Bayern Munich hosts Wolfsburg. Defending champion Bayer Leverkusen, who is in second place by four points, will play at home against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
