The 96th Annual Academy Awards took place on Sunday night, with Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Cord Jefferson and Chris Powers becoming winners.
Randolph took house Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for a Motion Picture Retainersoutperforming Danielle Brooks’ performance in violet Music Reports, AP. Powers won in the short documentary category for his film The last repair shopWhile The Jeffersons won the award for Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay). American fantasy.
The Best Supporting Actress win was huge for black viewers as they watched Randolph and Brooks compete in a major category against Emily Blunt for their roles. OppenheimerAmerica Ferrera in BarbieAnd Jodie Foster’s Naiad. Da’Vine Joy was emotional as she accepted her first-ever Academy Award and spoke about her chance to receive another award in the future.
“I always wanted to be different. Now I realize I just need to be myself,” Randolph said before shouting out the women who have helped her throughout her career. “I pray. I have to do this more often.”
Randolph’s role as Mary Lamb in Alexander Payne Retainers It saw her portray the cafeteria manager of a New England boarding school as she deals with grief and loss. Her Oscar rounds out the awards season sweep, with additional statues from the Screen Actors Guild, BAFTA, and Golden Globes.
Powers won for his short documentary highlighting the Los Angeles craftsmen who work hard to keep 80,000 musical instruments in working condition for the city’s public school students.

Jefferson, making his big-screen directorial debut, was outspoken during his Oscar acceptance speech, addressing any “risk-averse” film executive who might be hesitant to take a chance on more diverse scripts and new directors.
“I’ve talked a lot about how many people died in this film, and I worry that sometimes it feels vindictive.” He said. “It’s a call for recognition and acknowledgment that there are a lot of people who want the opportunity that I had.”
“I understand that this is a risk-averse industry; I get that,” he continued. “But $200 million movies also pose a risk. It doesn’t always work out, but you take the risk anyway. Instead of making one $200 million movie, try making 20 $10 million movies. Or 50 films worth $4 million.
Sterling K. was Brown, Jeffrey Wright, and Colman Domingo as well nominated But you didn’t stand a chance against Oppenheimerwho had a big win on Sunday, collecting statues for best supporting actor, which went to Robert Downey Jr., and Cillian Murphy, who beat out Wright and Domingo for best actor.
