BCCI’s 10-point diktat: What the new rules mean for Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah
The BCCI has come up with a 10-point guideline for the Indian cricket team after the Test series loss to Australia. Media reports claimed that the decision was taken after consultation with head coach Gautam Gambhir and was allegedly aimed at ending the “star culture” in the team. At present, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah are the biggest stars in the team and some of the rules affect them directly. The guidelines did not name a single cricketer, but here’s a look at how the new rules will impact the three senior members of the Indian cricket team.
The first point of the guidelines states: “Participation in domestic matches is mandatory for players to remain eligible for selection in the national team and for central contracts. Any exceptions to this mandate will only be considered under exceptional circumstances and will require formal notification and approval.” From the Chairman of the Selection Committee, ensuring fairness and transparency in the process.” The three seniors have not played domestic cricket for some time – Rohit last played in 2016, Bumrah in 2018, and Virat last played for Delhi in 2012.
The second point states that “All players are expected to travel with the team to and from matches and training sessions. Separate travel arrangements with families are not recommended to maintain discipline and team cohesion.” This is also an issue for the seniors as Virat rarely travels with the team since the coronavirus. Even during the Australia series, Virat and Bumrah traveled separately.
As per point 4, “Personal staff (such as personal managers, chefs, assistants and security) should be restricted from taking tours or series unless express approval is obtained from the BCCI.” While nothing official is known about the trio’s entourage, it will certainly impact their travel as the team moves forward.
The BCCI said that – “Players are not allowed to participate in personal photo shoots or endorsements during an ongoing series or tour.” Considering the popularity and commitment of the three star cricketers, this can be a big issue and may even affect their brand endorsement.
The new guidelines relating to families of cricketers state: “Players absent from India for more than 45 days during overseas tours may join their partners and children (under 18 years) for one visit per series (in terms of format) of up to a two-week period.” “. In the recent past, Rohit, Bumrah and Virat have traveled with their families and this rule is sure to affect the three big stars.
“Players are requested to remain with the team until the scheduled end of the match series or tour, regardless of whether the matches end earlier than planned,” the BCCI said. In the past, top players have gone home early when matches finish, but that will change due to new guidelines.
