Angelina Jolie recently dropped a surprising confession: She “lied” to get the role of opera legend Maria Callas in her upcoming biopic. With no prior singing experience, the Hollywood star boldly told director Pablo Larraín that she could keep the tune, and do whatever it took to secure the role.
With the film already receiving a Golden Globe nomination, it’s safe to say that Jolie has her sights set on another big stage — this time for the Academy Awards in March 2025. Her role in the film may be just the ticket to an Oscar nomination, but we’ll have to wait and see if she… The stars will align or not.
Angelina Jolie admits she lied to get a role in the movie Maria
During a conversation at the Palm Springs Film Festival, Jolie revealed in a chat with Variety how a previous comment about her vocal skills almost silenced her, but she kept moving forward. The actress recently took center stage as the leading lady in Pablo Larraín’s biopic of opera singer Maria Callas, which reimagines the singer’s final days.

“I never sang,” Julie said. “Someone once told me I couldn’t sing or was a bit dismissive when I was singing once, and that really put me down. I never told anyone, but it was a part of my life that I just blocked out.”
She recalled how Pablo offered her the role and asked her if she could sing, and the malicious actress said: “I lied.” “Can you ride a horse?” ‘Yes.’ Obviously no one can sing like Maria, but I’ll do my best.
Angelina Jolie’s advice: Live life to the full, and take risks
The actress, who recently finalized her divorce from ex-husband Brad Pitt after an eight-year long “ugly” legal battle, also shared advice for aspiring actors: It’s not just about chasing the next role but living life to the fullest. “There’s a lot to focus on just having a career – if you like theatre, you can do readings at home in your pajamas,” she said.
“You don’t have to have this job. Find ways to live as an artist, be around artists, but also live a very full life.”
